Shapewear has come a long way since its first appearance in the 1800’s as the corset. The corset was made to reduce the waist while straightening a woman’s posture. Modern waist shapewear is no longer closed by lacing at the back of the garment. Most waist cinchers, fajas and corsets now have double hook and eye closure and are much lighter than the original corsets from the 1800’s. Modern day body shapers are no longer made for just the waist and torso. Men and women can now find shapewear options to shape and tone the full body. With knit-in control panels and more breathable materials girdles are being made with comfort and convenience in mind.
